To sign a check over to somebody else, verify that a bank will accept the check, then endorse the back of the check and write “Pay to the order of John Doe.” Use the other person’s name instead of John Doe.
Then, pass the check on to that person so they can deposit or cash the check.
Can you cash a check that’s not in your name?
Endorsing a check
Blank endorsement: A blank endorsement is made by signing your name on the back of the check. You must sign it exactly the way it appears on the “Pay to the Order of” line. Anyone can cash or deposit a check with a blank endorsement, even if the check is not written to him or her.
Is it illegal to cash someone else’s check?
If they have co-signed the check, it is legal and called a 3th party check. Not all banks accept them, but a few do. If you get (steal), blank checks from someone else, fill it in with a forged signature, then cash it, you are violation of both State and Federal laws.26 Jul 2018
Can someone else sign my check?
You can protect yourself from accusations of forgery when signing someone else’s check by obtaining written authorization from that person. However, if you are only being asked to sign checks for an individual, then you can make this fact known by writing the initials “p.p.” on the check next to the signature.12 Dec 2018
Can someone deposit a check for me without my signature?
No endorsement: You don’t always have to endorse checks. Some banks allow you to deposit checks without a signature, account number, or anything else on the back. For extra security, you can still write “for deposit only” in the endorsement area.
